Grizzlies’ Jaren Jackson Jr. Faces Surgery After Injury in Intense “Live Basketball Run” Amid $240 Million Franchise Growth

The Memphis Grizzlies have announced that Jaren Jackson Jr., who recently signed a $240 million contract extension through five years, will undergo surgery for a lawn toe injury on his right foot. The injury occurred during offsite basketball activities. Jackson, 25, was evaluated on Monday and surgery was deemed necessary to address the injury. While a full recovery is expected, the timeline for his return remains uncertain until post-surgery assessments are made.

This turn of events is particularly unfortunate for Jackson and the Grizzlies, who have struggled with notable injury issues over recent seasons. In the 2024-25 season, Jackson appeared in 74 games but missed significant time due to an ankle injury late in the year. He also faced extensive absences in 2023-24 amid the Grizzlies’ broader injury woes, as well as a meniscus injury in 2020 that impacted much of his 2020-21 season.

Since securing the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2023, Jackson has emerged as a key figure for Memphis, earning his first All-Star selection last season while averaging 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game with shooting splits of 48.8% from the field, 37.5% from three, and 78.1% from the free throw line. Despite trading Desmond Bane during the offseason and grooming Jackson alongside Gelant as franchise cornerstones, the team now faces a third major injury setback with key players Zack Eday and Brandon Clarke also sidelined due to ankle surgery and a PCL sprain, respectively.

Fan Take: This injury news is a significant setback not only for the Grizzlies but for NBA fans who have come to appreciate Jaren Jackson Jr.’s high-impact defensive and scoring abilities. His recovery and eventual return will be crucial for Memphis’ hopes of maintaining competitiveness and could influence how the team manages player health going forward in one of basketball’s toughest leagues.
