Saturday was filled with excitement, goals, and a touch of uncertainty at the Club World Cup.

Borussia Dortmund was involved in a thrilling seven-goal match against Mamelodi Sundowns, Fluminense made a surprising comeback in the second half to stay in the tournament, and Inter Milan narrowly avoided disaster with a late recovery. Even the only goalless match of the day, River Plate vs. Monterrey, held significant implications as Group E’s fate hung in the balance.

Saturday’s FIFA Club World Cup Results

Borussia Dortmund 4, Mamelodi Sundowns 3

After a goalless draw against Fluminense earlier in the week, Borussia Dortmund found their scoring capabilities against Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa. The match kicked off with Lucas Ribeiro Costa scoring in the 11th minute for Sundowns, but Dortmund quickly responded with goals from Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy, and Jobe Bellingham. An own goal by Chryso Mudau added to the Sundowns’ woes, although they rallied back with Iqraam Rayners scoring in the 62nd minute and Lebo Mothiba pulling one back in the 90th. Despite their late push, they couldn’t secure a draw.

Inter Milan 2, Urawa Red Diamonds 1

After a disappointing campaign where they were defeated by PSG in the Champions League final, Inter Milan entered this tournament eager to prove themselves. They had a rocky start with a 1-1 draw against Monterrey, but quickly faced pressure from Urawa Red Diamonds when Takuro Kaneko outmaneuvered defenders to set up Watanabe, who scored just 11 minutes into the match. However, Lautaro Martinez equalized in the 78th minute, and Valentine Carboni sealed the game in stoppage time.

Though this loss knocked Urawa Red Diamonds out of contention, they must first face Monterrey again on Wednesday, while Inter will be up against River Plate.

Fluminense 4, Ulsan HD 2

Ulsan HD pushed Fluminense to their limits in an entertaining matchup but ultimately succumbed to a 4-2 defeat. Jhon Arias opened the scoring for Fluminense in the 27th minute, but Ulsan struck back with two quick goals from Jin Hyun Lee and UM Won Sang. After halftime, Fluminense found their attacking pace, with Nonato equalizing in the 66th minute, followed by goals from Juanfreitz and Keno to complete their comeback, putting Ulsan on the brink of elimination.

River Plate 0, Monterrey 0

The match between River Plate and Monterrey ended in a tense, scoreless draw at the Rose Bowl. River Plate needed a win to secure their advancement, but despite the efforts of 17-year-old Franco Mustantouno, they couldn’t bypass Monterrey’s Rock-solid defense. While the result was disappointing for River, it showcased Monterrey’s tactical proficiency.
