Jone Smith Expresses Gratitude for Dolphins Experience, Excited to Join the Steelers

Jone Smith had expected his NFL journey to conclude in Miami, planning to settle there with his family. However, last week brought a surprise when he, along with cornerback Jalen Ramsey, was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for Safety Minka Fitzpatrick. This unexpected move caught Smith off guard, especially as he had just set Miami Dolphins franchise records for a tight end in the 2024 season with 88 receptions, 884 yards, and 8 touchdowns.

Reflecting on his time with the Dolphins, Smith expressed that he felt he was a vital part of the team’s success and had believed Miami would be his long-term home, both professionally and personally. He hoped the Dolphins would be part of his new contract negotiations, but described the team’s approach as giving him the “run around.” He understood the team’s challenges but was ultimately told they couldn’t offer him a contract reflective of his Pro Bowl status.

Following the trade, Smith is set to sign a $12 million extension through 2026 with the Steelers, a significant increase from his $3.49 million base salary this season. Despite the harsh realities of NFL business, Smith remains thankful for his Dolphins experience and holds no ill feelings toward Miami or its organization. After spending one season in Miami, the veteran tight end is optimistic about his future with Pittsburgh, grateful for the opportunity.

Fan Take: This trade highlights the often unpredictable nature of NFL careers and contract negotiations, reminding fans that even top performers can face uncertainty. It also sets the stage for a potentially dynamic new chapter with the Steelers, which could reshape team strengths and impact playoff races in the coming seasons.
