Delacroix Edges Out Ombudsman in Thrilling Coral and Elderly Stakes Online at Sandown

Delacroix, guided by jockey Ryan Moore, executed an impressive late surge to secure a thrilling win in the Santown Coral Stakes and the Elderly Stakes. Starting from the rear of the six-horse lineup, Moore skillfully blocked William Buick, who was chasing his 2,000th British win, crossing the finish line just ahead. This marked the third Santown feature race victory for trainer Aidan O’Brien, who also placed ninth overall. Delacroix, originally favored for last month’s Epsom Derby but ultimately did not compete, achieved a form of redemption with this result.

Moore shared with ITV Race that the race strategy was not straightforward — with few willing to set the pace, it became a tactical contest among three riders at the finish. Both Moore and Buick aimed for similar positioning, leading Moore to yield space strategically. The race pace was moderate for this level, but Delacroix’s strong finishing speed made the decisive difference. Oisin Murphy secured third place riding for trainer Charlie Appleby.

Fan Take: This victory highlights the tactical depth and thrilling finishes that make horse racing so exciting for fans. Delacroix’s comeback and the jockeys’ strategic maneuvers underscore the sport’s blend of skill, endurance, and split-second decision-making, keeping enthusiasts engaged and eager for what’s next.
