The NFL recently introduced the Protector of the Year award, celebrating the best offensive linemen in the league. Created in response to players’ demands for greater recognition of offensive linemen, this award is voted on by six former NFL linemen—LeCharles Bentley, Jason Kelce, Shaun O’Hara, Orlando Pace, Will Shields, and Andrew Whitworth. They assess nominees using five criteria: skill, impact, leadership, durability, and the strength of their opponents. Given the expertise and backgrounds of the voters, the award values nuanced qualities like pass protection, often overlooked in public voting.

Among the favorites for this honor are Lane Johnson (+750) and Penei Sewell (+650), with Johnson seen as the strongest candidate despite Sewell beating him for first-team All-Pro in 2024. Johnson is widely regarded as the best offensive lineman in the league, excelling in pass protection and consistently performing at an elite level over several seasons. Another strong contender is Trent Williams (+950), a seasoned player known for his excellent pass blocking and game-changing run blocks, who would also be a top pick if he remains healthy. Finally, long shot Creed Humphrey (+2200), a rising star and recent first-team All-Pro center following Kelce’s retirement, has a solid chance, especially given the significant voice centers hold within the voting committee.

Geoff Schwartz, a former NFL lineman and current Fox Sports analyst, endorses Johnson as the top pick, emphasizing the difficult role of a right tackle in pass protection, which Johnson handles better than most. The Protector of the Year award reflects a deeper understanding of offensive line play and aims to highlight players whose vital contributions often go unnoticed.

Fan Take: This new award is a game-changer for NFL fans who now get to appreciate the critical role offensive linemen play in their team’s success. Recognizing these unsung heroes not only deepens the understanding of football but also elevates the appreciation for the complexity and skill inherent in the sport.
