Josh Giddy understandably held some resentment towards the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team that selected him sixth overall in the 2021 NBA Draft but later traded him to the Chicago Bulls during their most recent offseason. Giddy was initially seen as a foundational player for the Thunder’s rebuilding phase, especially after they also traded veteran guard Alex Caruso. To add to the sting, the Thunder secured their first NBA Finals championship in the season following Giddy’s departure.

Reflecting on his feelings during an appearance on the Ball Magnets Podcast, Giddy admitted that when he left Oklahoma City, he hoped the team wouldn’t make the playoffs or succeed. However, his perspective has evolved as he now enjoys watching the Thunder play, given his connections to many players and staff there despite his current commitment to the Bulls.

Giddy expressed a deep appreciation for the people in Oklahoma City, acknowledging the strong relationships he built during his time there. He mentioned loving the team and its fans and hopes to continue supporting the Thunder’s success whenever possible. Playing in Oklahoma City, especially during the playoffs, was a memorable experience for him thanks to the incredible fan base.

Throughout three seasons with the Thunder, Giddy emerged as one of the NBA’s most promising young point guards, averaging 13.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game in the 2023-24 season. Despite his consistent performance and leadership, the Thunder traded him to the Bulls. Since joining Chicago, the 22-year-old has shined even brighter, posting averages of 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in the 2024-25 season and helping the Bulls remain contenders in the playoff race.

Giddie is a restricted free agent this offseason but has yet to finalize a new contract with Chicago.

Fan Take: This story highlights the complexities of player-team relationships in the NBA, showing how trades can be emotionally challenging even for young stars like Giddy. It also underscores the resilience and adaptability required by players to thrive amid changes, which keeps fans invested in the evolving journeys of their favorite athletes and teams.
