Cabonta Turpin, the Dallas Cowboys’ All-Pro Kick Returner, was taken into custody by the Allen, Texas police on Saturday, facing two misdemeanor charges according to online records. The 28-year-old was booked at the Collin County Jail for possession of marijuana (under 2 ounces) and illegal transportation of a weapon. He was released Sunday after posting a $1,500 bond.

Turpin, who also plays wide receiver, secured a three-year, $18 million contract extension with the Cowboys in March. In his first season as a standout kickoff returner, he led the NFL with an average of 33.5 yards per return and scored a 99-yard touchdown against Washington. This average was the second highest since the 1970 NFL merger. Additionally, Turpin scored a punt return touchdown, making him the only player in the league last season to score on both kickoff and punt returns. He also made history as the first Cowboy to score a punt return, kickoff return, and touchdown reception all in one season. He ended the year with a career-high 31 receptions, two touchdowns, and 420 receiving yards, including a long catch of 64 yards.

This information was reported using details from ESPN’s Todd Archer.

Fan Take: This news is significant for NFL fans as Turpin is a rising star with game-changing potential in the return game and as a receiver. His off-field issues could impact his promising career and the Cowboys’ special teams’ strength, underscoring how personal conduct can affect the sport’s landscape.
