The star players from the US and Mexico delivered a number of unforgettable performances at the Concacaf Gold Cup, culminating in two significant rival matches in the final in Houston on Sunday (with coverage starting at 6 PM PT on the Fox and Fox Sports apps).

Before the trophies get contested, marking the eighth meeting of these rivals in Gold Cup history, Fox Sports compiled a selection of the best player matchups from both teams. Here are the results:

Lewis Maragon, Mexico

Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Club America
Age: 28

While Matt Freeze shone as a penalty shootout hero against Costa Rica, Maragon has proven to be a more reliable goalkeeper overall. After conceding two goals in the Gold Cup opener against the Dominican Republic, he has solidified his performance without any further goals against him. His experience in high-stakes finals — both in La Liga MX and during the Nations League final in March — gives him a competitive edge.

Julian Araujo, Mexico

Position: Right-back
Club: Bournemouth
Age: 23

Formerly a USMNT player, Araujo has established himself in this tournament, with Mexican coach Javier Aguirre favoring him over experienced veteran Jorge Sanchez. Araujo faces a significant challenge as he aims to neutralize the USMNT attack featuring talents like Diego Luna and Malik Tillman.

Chris Richards, USA

Position: Center-back
Club: Crystal Palace
Age: 25

Having played nearly every minute in this Gold Cup, Richards is solidifying his role for next year’s World Cup. He scored the decisive goal against Saudi Arabia and made crucial defensive plays, showcasing his fierce determination and commitment to supporting his teammates during tough moments.

Cesar Montes, Mexico

Position: Center-back
Club: Lokomotiv Moscow
Age: 28

If the World Cup were to begin today, Montes would likely start alongside fearsome defender Johan Vasquez. Known for scoring goals (3) during this Gold Cup, he poses a significant aerial threat during set-pieces, compelling the USMNT to keep a close eye on him during corners.

Max Arfsten, USA

Position: Left-back
Club: Columbus Crew
Age: 24

The absence of Antony “Jedi” Robinson was a significant concern for fans during this Gold Cup, but Arfsten has stepped up effectively. He played well against Costa Rica, winning the Man of the Match award with his goal and leading the tournament with three assists.

Edson Alvarez, Mexico

Position: Defensive Midfielder
Club: West Ham United
Age: 27

It’s a tight competition between him and Tyler Adams in the midfield. Both are adept defensively, but Alvarez has enhanced his offensive capabilities this tournament, making him a critical player to watch in Sunday’s finals as both captains aim to keep their teammates calm under pressure.

Diego Luna, USA

As the breakout star of the tournament for the US, “Moonman” has notched three goals and two assists in five matches. Only Panama’s Ismael Diaz, the tournament’s top scorer, has contributed more goals than Luna (5).
