Flyers Depth Chart 1.0: Initial Insights and Roster Strength Analysis

The Philadelphia Flyers did not make many changes to their roster this offseason, but the adjustments made are enough to alter the team’s depth chart and potentially impact their performance in the upcoming season. New head coach Rick Tocchet aims to energize a previously stagnant roster as the team transitions from the 2023-24 to 2024-25 season.

Significant departures include veterans Cam Atkinson, Mark Streit, and backup goalie Felix Sandstrom. However, the Flyers have brought in Trevor Zegras and Christian Dvorak to fill the gaps left by Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost, who were traded to the Calgary Flames earlier this year. It’s important to note that the projected depth chart assumes all key players, including Tyson Foerster, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Noah Juulsen, are healthy.

The Flyers will have strong representation at the 2025 Junior Summer Showcase, featuring prospects like Tyson Foerster, Trevor Zegras, and Matvei Michkov among others. Foerster is expected to play significant minutes, especially on penalty kills. Zegras is recognized as an NHL-caliber center with strong playmaking and scoring skills, though his defensive progress remains under observation.

Owen Tippett’s speed and reach make him a valuable penalty killer, and there is potential for him to evolve into a high-volume shooter under Tocchet’s guidance. Alex Bump may start the season with around 14-15 minutes per night, while Nikita Glebenkin could see about 12 minutes, primarily on the second power play unit. Prospects like Jett Lucanko, Denver Burkey, and Devin Kaplan may also get NHL ice time depending on injuries and team needs.

Defensively, Travis Sanheim, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Cam York are expected to log heavy minutes in both even-strength and penalty-killing roles. Jamie Drysdale led the Flyers in power-play ice time last year and remains the top candidate for that role, with others like Emil Andrae and Egor Zamula also contributing. If Andrae does not make the roster, York will likely take on more power-play responsibilities.

In goal, Dan Vladar is expected to be the starter, backed up by Sam Erson. Alexei Korostelev is likely to return given his situation with Dynamo Minsk, while Ivan Fedotov and Carson Bjarnason remain additional options in the goalie depth chart.

Fan Take: This offseason’s moves highlight the Flyers’ focus on balancing veteran leadership with up-and-coming talent, which could breathe new life into the team’s lineup. For hockey fans, this blend of fresh energy and experienced presence could lead to an exciting shift in the Flyers’ competitiveness and development in the coming years.
