Tim Rooney, a longtime NFL executive and nephew of Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr., passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 84 after battling cancer. Rooney began his career with the Steelers in 1972 as a scout and eventually became the director of pro scouting. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, he is credited with helping draft Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert, having personally scouted him in Kent.

In 1979, Rooney left the Steelers to join the Detroit Lions before moving to the New York Giants in 1985 as the director of professional staff, a role he held until 1999, later returning in a part-time capacity. During his tenure, Rooney was part of teams that secured six Super Bowl victories. Hall of Fame Coach Bill Purcell praised Rooney as a trusted voice who consistently provided honest assessments, highlighting their close working relationship and mutual understanding.

This report also included contributions from field-level media.

Fan Take: Tim Rooney’s impact on multiple successful NFL franchises underscores the critical role behind-the-scenes talent evaluators play in building championship teams. His legacy reminds fans that greatness in football is often shaped by the unsung heroes who identify and nurture talent off the field.
