Dr. Agne’s Unbreakable Bond Sparks an Emotional Triumph for Team Devote

Dr. Agne, the first foal of Champion Lady Eli, made an emotional and victorious debut on the second day of racing at the Saratoga Race Course. Named in honor of Dr. Robert Agne, a respected veterinarian who tragically passed away in 2015, the colt’s success was a touching tribute to his namesake. Despite challenging conditions, Dr. Agne, ridden by jockey Jose Ortiz, overcame a slow start and a tricky track to win a special weight mile-long grass maiden race for two-year-olds, finishing with a time of 1:25.97 on a fast track.

Dr. Robert Agne played a crucial role in nursing Lady Eli back to health after she suffered laminitis following her Grade 1 Belmont Oaks win in 2015. His widow, Carrie Agne, was moved to tears at the race, reflecting on the colt’s shared spirit with her late husband. Trainer Shelley Devocneila confirmed that Dr. Agne’s next races will likely be on grass, with possibilities including the G3 at Saratoga in August.

Dr. Agne, owned by Madaket Stables LLC, Twin Brook Stables, and Belladonna Racing LLC, was sold for $185,000 at the 2024 Keeneland sale and has a promising pedigree, with half-siblings including a winner in Ireland and offspring by top sires Justify and Uncle Mo.

This story was originally reported by the Paulick Report on July 11, 2025.

Fan Take: Dr. Agne’s debut win is more than just a promising start for a young racehorse; it’s a testament to the lasting impact of the people behind the scenes who care deeply for these champions. For horse racing fans, this victory symbolizes hope and resilience, reminding us that every great horse carries a meaningful story that enriches the sport.
