New Orleans Pelicans’ new GM Joe Dumars is shaping the team’s roster, and Herb Jones is a key part of that vision. On Thursday, the Pelicans and Jones agreed to a three-year extension worth $68 million, which includes a player option in the final year, as reported by Shams Charania on ESPN. This deal will add three seasons to Jones’ current two-year contract, meaning he could stay with the team for a total of five seasons, earning $96.4 million.

Jones is known for his elite defensive skills on the wing, earning a spot on the 2023-24 All-Defensive Team. He averaged 10.3 points per game last season and has a career 3-point shooting percentage of 36.6%, making him a valuable 3-and-D player. Alongside Trey Jones III and Zion Williamson, Herb Jones is a fundamental piece of the Pelicans’ core.

Given his reputation as a top wing defender, several teams have expressed interest in trading for Jones in recent years, but New Orleans has declined those offers. Nevertheless, if Dumars and the Pelicans decide to change direction, Jones’ contract remains attractive and affordable for potential trade partners.

Fan Take: This extension solidifies the Pelicans’ commitment to building a strong defensive core, which can transform their competitiveness in the league. For basketball fans, it highlights the increasing value of versatile wing defenders who can influence the game on both ends of the court.
