Struggling to Find Their Rhythm: Cooper Flag and Bronnie James Battle It Out in No. 1 Pick Summer League Debut

On the opening day of the NBA Las Vegas Summer League, the Dallas Mavericks justified the high ticket prices by narrowly defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 87-85. This thrilling game marked the debut of Cooper Flagg, the top overall draft pick and former Duke standout, who contributed 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists against Bronny James, LeBron James’ son. Flagg described the game as “just another game,” highlighting the new pace, feel, and adjustments required.

Unlike previous years where the first and second overall draft picks face each other on opening night, this year’s spotlight was on Flagg going head-to-head with Bronny James, which significantly boosted interest. Tickets for Flagg’s debut were historically expensive, with lower bowl seats priced at $650 and courtside seats reaching $2,500, drawing fans to line up as early as 5:45 a.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Flagg encountered a tough welcome to the NBA, getting double-teamed early but still managing a powerful one-handed dunk for his first points after missing his first two shots. Mavericks coach Jason Kidd highlighted Flagg’s role as a key ball-handler and initiator, noting his growth in creating his own shots, despite shooting 5-for-21 and failing to score in the second half. Flagg’s calmness and decision-making stood out despite the shooting slump.

Bronny James appeared more confident and aggressive compared to earlier games, scoring early with a step-back jumper and a three-pointer despite missing crucial late-game threes that could have won it for the Lakers. He finished with eight points, two rebounds, and two assists in 21 minutes while matching up against the notably smaller Flagg at times, showing promise for his progression in the NBA or G-League.

Another standout was Ryan Nenbird, who went undrafted but showed significant potential, leading the floor with 21 points, five assists, and steals. Dallas could benefit from his consistent playmaking as they await Kyrie Irving’s recovery and lean on new addition D’Angelo Russell.

Fan Take: This matchup between Flagg and Bronny is more than just a game; it’s a glimpse into the future of basketball—a battle between two rising stars from notable basketball lineages. The intense fan interest and high ticket prices signal a strong appetite for new talent and exciting storylines, which can drive the sport’s popularity and evolution in the coming years.
