From Underdog to All-Star: How Cubs’ Matthew Boyd Rises and the Quiet Additions Prove Their Worth

Chicago Cubs left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd is set to make his 19th start of the season on Saturday, facing off against the New York Yankees. Boyd, competing with fellow left-hander Max Fried for All-Star recognition, signed a two-year, $29 million deal and has shown remarkable performance this year. At 34, despite a limited number of starts over the past three years, Boyd has impressed with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.87 and a 101 ERA+ rating. In his first 18 starts this season, he posted a 2.52 ERA (152 ERA+) and a 4.17 strikeout-to-walk ratio, leading Chicago in innings pitched and contributing significantly to the team’s success, valued at an estimated 2.1 wins above replacement.

Boyd’s improvement stems from adjustments in his pitching style, including an increase in his average fastball velocity and greater reliance on his four-seam fastball. The Cubs rank high in fastball usage compared to other MLB teams, which has boosted Boyd’s effectiveness and earned him All-Star status, making him one of the best underrated acquisitions this season.

Other notable players include Adrian Hauser and Andrew Smith from Chicago, the latter making an immediate All-Star impact after being picked from the Milwaukee Brewers in the Rule 5 draft. Boston’s catcher José Miranda, who was acquired from the Yankees, shines both offensively with a .272 average and defensively, ranking among the top catchers according to advanced metrics. Orioles’ Ramón Laureano has exceeded expectations by improving his plate discipline and power, becoming a key outfielder despite initial doubts. Cleveland Guardians’ Logan Allen has excelled since his trade, lowering fastball use in favor of devastating curveballs and sinkers, resulting in a 2.72 ERA since June. Lastly, Houston Astros’ Phil Maton, recovering from injury, has contributed significantly with a 3.98 ERA and exceptional changeup usage, helping the team remain competitive in the AL West despite injuries.
