On Friday morning, WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis was arrested on battery charges and taken into custody in Miami Beach, roughly a month following an alleged assault on his ex-girlfriend. According to the police report, the incident happened outside the victim’s home on Father’s Day, June 15th.

Authorities report that Davis and the victim, who share two children, were in a relationship for about four years. The confrontation started when Davis went to the victim’s residence to pick up the child, initially leading to a verbal argument that escalated into physical violence.

Davis allegedly told the victim to remove the child from the car. When she attempted to do so, he struck her on the back of the head, slapped her, and caused a small cut on her lips. The victim sent a text to her mother alerting her about the situation and asking for help. The victim’s mother witnessed the daughter crying and arguing with Davis, and recorded a video showing Davis throwing a small box at the ex-girlfriend.

Police noted that Davis did not sign the Miranda warning form at the station after filling it out. He is currently held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Centre, with bond information available in prison records.

Davis has a history of arrests and was previously under house arrest after pleading guilty to four counts of injury in June 2023. He served the remainder of his sentence in prison after violating its terms.

Fan Take: This incident adds another layer of controversy around Gervonta Davis, a prominent figure in boxing, reminding fight fans that athletes’ personal conduct can heavily impact their public and professional lives. It underscores the importance of accountability in the sport, as true champions must exemplify respect and discipline both inside and outside the ring.
