Trump to Attend Club World Cup Ceremony as Chelsea Celebrates Trophy Victory from the Frontlines

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — President Donald Trump participated in the award presentation at Sunday’s Club World Cup final, congratulating Chelsea’s Captain Reece James as he lifted the trophy after Chelsea triumphed over Paris Saint-Germain with a 3-0 score.

While making his way to the stage for the post-match ceremony at Metlife Stadium, Trump faced considerable booing from the crowd, although he initially carried the trophy alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino to James.

After taking a break from the earlier football event, Trump stood beside James, engaging in conversation with him, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, and other players such as Cole Palmer. James later noted that there had been speculation Trump would present the trophy and then depart, but it seemed he chose to stay longer than expected.

At a post-match press conference, Palmer admitted he was aware of Trump’s attendance but was surprised to see him actually involved in the trophy presentation.

Trump was seen applauding and smiling, hugging James as they celebrated, and shaking hands with Infantino while Chelsea players celebrated around them. Following this, the team repeatedly lifted their trophies amid a fireworks display.

Generally, the leader of the World Cup host nation is expected to partake in the trophy presentation, although typically they allow the winning players some stage time to celebrate alone.

During the Qatar World Cup, for example, the country’s leader introduced the trophy to Lionel Messi and stayed by his side while Messi celebrated with his teammates.

FIFA faced criticism then when the Qatar leader draped a traditional cloak around Messi during the festivities, showcasing the cultural significance of the moment.

However, Infantino and Trump took things a step further at the Club World Cup. Their display of camaraderie seems to reflect the U.S. government’s support in organizing both this tournament and the 2026 World Cup, suggesting an effort to solidify their partnership.

Infantino called this relationship “absolutely important,” having engaged with various U.S. administrations, including participating in the inaugural meeting of the 2026 World Cup Task Force established by Trump.

Trump’s cabinet members, including U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy and others, attended the event, while Vice President JD Vance had previously been seen at another Club World Cup match. The security presence was notably increased, featuring Secret Service agents stationed throughout the stadium.

Arriving about an hour prior to kickoff, Trump watched from the midfield suite alongside Infantino. Although he was briefly shown on the stadium’s video board before the national anthem, the reaction was mixed with only a few boos.

His presence became more pronounced during the trophy ceremony, where a blend of boos and cheers greeted him as he was shown on the field. Chelsea players and coach Enzo Maresca offered neutral remarks when asked about Trump’s involvement in the celebrations.

“It shows how significant the tournament is,” James commented.

Fan Take: Trump’s participation in the trophy presentation underscores the blend of sports and politics, which can shape public perception and fan experience. For soccer fans, this event demonstrates the increasing influence and visibility of the sport on a global stage, making it a focal point for political connections and cultural celebrations.
