Shane Van Gisbergen praised NASCAR rising star Connor Zilisch for his composed and strategic driving during their intense battle in Saturday’s Xfinity Series race at Sonoma. While Van Gisbergen dominated Sunday’s Cup Series race at the California road course, he narrowly lost the Xfinity race to Zilisch by a mere 0.04 seconds after a fierce head-to-head competition over the final two laps.
The two young drivers, both racing for JR Motorsport Chevrolet on the challenging 2.5-mile road course, showcased incredible skill, with 18-year-old Zilisch holding strong to claim victory. Zilisch is slated to move up full-time to the Cup Series next year with Trackhouse Racing, potentially joining Ross Chastain and Van Gisbergen, should Van Gisbergen extend his contract with the team.
Van Gisbergen, impressed by Zilisch’s maturity on the track, shared, “We’re going to be racing against him a lot in the future. He doesn’t behave like an 18-year-old out there. He places his car perfectly and drives so well. He’s an incredible young talent. Whether he’ll be my teammate next year or not, I hope so—it would be a blast.”
Both drivers are Red Bull-backed and are already competing aggressively in NASCAR’s top two tiers. While Van Gisbergen focuses mainly on the Cup Series with select Xfinity starts, Zilisch balances a full-time Xfinity schedule with four Cup Series races for Trackhouse Racing this year. Zilisch acknowledged Van Gisbergen’s significant impact on elevating the Cup Series competition, especially on road courses.
“The best part is how much he pushes the entire field, especially on Sundays. No one else has come in and dominated like he has,” Zilisch said. “I’ve heard people say I’m improving and could challenge him, and I’ve enjoyed watching his growth. If he keeps developing his skills, especially with the nuances of the race, it’s going to be amazing to watch. He’s on the right path and doing all the right things to get better. I just enjoy racing with him and learning from him.”
Fan Take: This epic battle between Van Gisbergen and Zilisch highlights the thrilling emergence of young talent in NASCAR, promising more exciting and competitive races ahead. Their progression not only raises the level of competition but also fuels the sport’s evolution, keeping fans eagerly anticipating the future stars of racing.
