How Mexico’s Win Transformed Shane Van Gisbergen’s Approach at the Chicago NASCAR Race

Shane Van Gisbergen delivered a stunning performance in Mexico City, securing victory with the largest winning margin in a NASCAR Cup race in over 15 years. As the series moves to the streets of Chicago, all eyes are on the driver who defeated the No. 88 car. Van Gisbergen’s NASCAR debut in Mexico marked a historic moment not seen at this level in over six decades and has set him on a path away from supercars to a full-time NASCAR stock car racing career.

Van Gisbergen shared his appreciation for the venue, despite not being a fan of city environments. He described Chicago’s track as a blend of the Gold Coast and Adelaide Circuit, noting the challenging high-speed corners that require heavy braking. He aimed to race in Chicago last year but was thwarted after an incident with Chase Briscoe under braking, and the wet conditions caused multiple issues.

On road and street courses, a common tactic is to pit right before a stage ends, maintaining track position and staying on the lead lap to cycle to the front for the restart. With a previous win already under his belt, Van Gisbergen might alter his approach to the stages this weekend. He mentioned that his current standing allows for potential playoff points strategy, but it could also push him back in the next stage.

Currently, Van Gisbergen has accumulated six playoff points, including five from his Mexico win and one from a stage win. Another win would ease concerns about his playoff position, especially with eight races left in the regular season. Four new winners could cause some drivers with lower points to be eliminated. Van Gisbergen prefers to focus on his own racing rather than worry about the playoff math.
