Jets Seal $130M, Four-Year Deal with Star Wide Receiver Garrett Wilson

The New York Jets have secured wide receiver Garrett Wilson with a new contract extension. On Monday afternoon, the Jets agreed to a four-year deal worth $130 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Wilson is the first player from the Jets’ 2022 draft class to receive an extension.

Wilson’s contract averages $32.5 million annually, with $90 million guaranteed. He is the first wide receiver in NFL history to average over $31 million per season after three years. This deal ranks among the highest-paid for wide receivers in the league, with only a few players, led by Cincinnati Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase, earning more.

Selected as the 10th overall pick by the Jets from Ohio State in 2022, Wilson has consistently recorded over 1,000 receiving yards each season of his career. Last year, he achieved career highs with 1,104 receiving yards, seven touchdowns, and 101 receptions.

Despite Wilson’s impressive individual performance, the Jets have struggled, finishing 5-12 last season and missing the playoffs for the 14th consecutive year. The team also made coaching changes, firing Robert Saleh and hiring Aaron Glenn, while parting ways with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Wilson has notably played alongside seven different quarterbacks without missing a game and will now team up with new Jets quarterback Justin Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract this offseason.

Breaking the Jets’ postseason drought will require more than just a new quarterback, but locking Wilson down for the next six seasons is a strong move toward rebuilding the franchise’s future. The team now plans to negotiate extensions with other members of their draft class.

Fan Take: This contract extension signals the Jets’ commitment to building a strong core around a dynamic young star, Garrett Wilson. NFL fans should watch closely, as this move could mark the beginning of a significant turnaround for a franchise hungry for success.
