NBA Owners Seek Fresh Research on Expansion Plans with No Set Timeline for City Selection

Las Vegas – Adam Silver views the NBA’s exploration into expansion as a positive move forward, although it seems some current NBA owners are hesitant about speeding up the process.

After the NBA committee meeting, Silver explained that the league is currently undertaking a detailed study with no set deadline. Seattle and Las Vegas remain the primary candidates for new franchises, but the decision isn’t imminent.

“This is just the beginning of our analysis, so it’s too soon to discuss costs or timing,” Silver said.

Despite growing excitement around NBA expansion, Seattle fans, eager for the league’s return, might see this new cautious step as a delay. Some owners appear to want to slow down the process, yet Silver emphasizes that this careful approach is intentional.

“The league office has been tasked by the board to conduct a thorough review of both economic and non-economic factors involved in expansion,” Silver noted, highlighting concerns like talent dilution and how expansion could impact overall league competition.

Economic considerations are particularly challenging. These include how to value future growth projections for the league and how local broadcast deals might affect fan engagement. With franchises like the Celtics recently valued at $6.1 billion and the Lakers at $10 billion, determining the worth of a new team is complex.

While economic hurdles can be overcome if owners are willing, the key question is whether there’s enough interest among the 30 current owners to expand.

“Owner interest is still growing and exploratory,” Silver said. “The question is, as an owner, would this addition ultimately benefit the league? Benefits can be measured in various ways.”

Silver has personally supported expansion in the past, but as he represents the owners, he respects their wish to proceed cautiously and conduct more study before making a firm decision.

Seattle (which has a strong fan base eager for a team) and Las Vegas are considered the front runners, but other cities are also expressing interest. This enthusiasm is positive for the league, which hopes high demand will drive up the expansion price.

Questions about pricing, interested cities, and timelines remain unanswered for now. The league will continue its in-depth evaluation, a process expected to take time and move slowly.

Fan Take: This news is important for basketball fans because it signals that the NBA is seriously considering expansion, which could bring professional basketball back to cities like Seattle and introduce the sport to vibrant new markets like Las Vegas. While the process may be slow, the potential for new teams means more opportunities to grow the game and connect with fresh fan bases nationwide.
