Chicago Bulls’ Rising Young Star Proves He Can Fill Lonzo Ball’s Shoes with a Stunning 40-Point Summer League Performance

The Chicago Bulls might have discovered a long-term substitute for Lonzo Ball, following his impressive showing in the NBA Summer League. After years of struggling to become a competitive team, the Bulls came close during the 2021-22 NBA season with key signings like Alex Caruso, Lonzo Ball, and DeMar DeRozan. The team was among the best in the Eastern Conference and even topped the rankings until injuries hit, especially Lonzo Ball’s long-term injury, which changed their trajectory and led to a roster shake-up, including trading Ball to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Bulls face questions about who could replace Ball’s impact, but it seems they might have found the answer earlier this year. On February 19, Chicago signed former Denver Nuggets and G-League star Jameel Young to a two-way contract. Although Young didn’t play much during the regular season, he excelled in the G-League with the Grand Rapids Gold and Windy City Bulls, earning NBA G League All-Rookie First Team honors. In the NBA Summer League, after a slow start, Young exploded for 40 points against the Milwaukee Bucks, showing remarkable improvement in his shooting, especially from beyond the arc.

If Young continues to develop, he could become a dependable rotation guard for the Bulls as the franchise aims to build around young talent like Josh Giddy and Matas Buselis, alongside Coby White. The team also added former Grizzlies player Kawamura to their summer league roster, though his future remains uncertain.

The Bulls remain a team in the rebuilding phase, hoping this youthful core can eventually bring them out of the shadow of Michael Jordan’s legendary era. Patience will be key in their journey back to NBA championship contention.

Fan Take: This news is exciting for basketball fans because it highlights the Bulls’ strategic shift towards developing young talent, which could reshape their future. If Jameel Young continues to improve, he could be a vital piece in Chicago’s quest to return to prominence in the NBA.
