As the 2025 NFL training camp approaches, ESPN has consulted league insiders—including executives, coaches, and scouts—to rank the top 10 players across 11 positions from quarterback to cornerback. This marks the sixth edition of these rankings, reflecting significant changes compared to last year’s list.

The ranking process involved over 70 voters who submitted their top 10 players per position, with results compiled using vote counts, averages, interviews, and film analysis led by ESPN NFL analyst Matt Bowen. The rankings focus solely on identifying the best players currently, not projecting future performance or career achievements.

The week-by-week release schedule covered all major positions, culminating with the cornerback list on July 16. This year, younger players dominate the cornerback rankings, highlighting a shift as several established stars dropped out of the elite group. With many top corners still on rookie contracts, fresh talent is seen as crucial to matching top receivers stride for stride.

Critics noted the lack of true shutdown corners in recent years, but at least two players this year fit that mold. There’s also increasing debate about whether nickel corners should be categorized separately. Coaches predict veterans like Jalen Ramsey and Marlon Humphrey may increasingly play nickel roles later in their careers, given the evolving nature of defensive schemes.

Several emerging slot corners such as Cooper Dejean and Arone Taylor are on the cusp of breaking into the rankings next year, but the current list showcases those voting insiders consider the top all-around corners.

At the top is Patrick Surtain II, who dominated the votes with nearly 90% of first-place rankings, showing strong ball skills, methodical technique, and excellent coverage metrics that make him a standout defender for Denver. Texans’ Derek Stingley Jr. followed closely, rising dramatically from 10th to 2nd place due to his elite ball production and physicality.

Other top-ranked corners include Denzel Ward, known for his ball-hawking ability and coverage skills; Sauce Gardner, praised for his natural talent despite some recent struggles; and Bryan McDuffie, valued for his versatility and instincts despite being slightly undersized. Young players like Devonte Mitchell and Stephon Witherspoon also made the list, recognized for potential and aggressive play.

Honorable mentions include veterans Jalen Ramsey, considered to be in a transitional phase, and Marlon Humphrey, a top slot corner. Additional mentions feature players like Trevon Diggs, Byron Murphy Jr., AJ Terrell, and L’Jarius Sneed, who have shown promising performances or resilience amidst challenges.

Overall, these rankings signal a dynamic shift in the cornerback position, with youth and versatility gaining prominence as teams adapt to increasingly sophisticated passing offenses.

Fan Take: This ranking highlights how the NFL cornerback role is evolving, emphasizing youth, agility, and adaptability. For fans, it means an exciting new generation of defenders is poised to redefine defensive play, promising more intense and competitive matchups against the league’s top receivers.
