UFC 318’s ‘Animal’: From Dana White’s Next Big Star to Only Two Wins in Seven Years

UFC 318 represents a notable moment where many fighters who once showed promise under Dana White’s spotlight now find themselves struggling. The premier MMA organization is making its return to Louisiana after more than ten years, with the New Orleans event spotlighting the farewell fight of local hero Dustin Poirier. After an 18-year career, Poirier is stepping away from the sport following his BMF title bout against Max Holloway.

But the main event isn’t the only compelling story on fight night. One of the event’s highlights is the comeback attempt of Paulo Costa, a former undefeated contender whose career has seen a sharp decline despite Dana White’s early high praise. White once heralded Costa as a rising Brazilian star following his knockout victory over veteran contender Uriah Hall at UFC 226 in 2018. Costa further cemented his status by defeating Yoel Romero in the thrilling fight of the night at UFC 241 in 2019.

However, since then, Costa’s fortunes have sharply fallen. He has won only once in the past six years, losing four of his last five fights, including recent defeats to Robert Whittaker and Sean Strickland. Although a strong showing against Johnny Walker last year suggested a potential resurgence, Costa, now 34, remains determined to recapture his former dominance when he fights Roman Kopylov at UFC 318.

Israel Adesanya, who dealt Costa one of his most significant losses at UFC 253 five years ago, has been candid about Costa’s recent struggles. Adesanya recently urged Costa to “get serious” and show the commitment and skill that made him so dangerous in the past, emphasizing the need for Costa to focus fully if he wants to compete at the highest level again.

Costa faces the challenge of defending his 13th-ranked middleweight position against Kopylov in the co-main event on July 19th at UFC 318.

Fan Take: This event is more than just another fight night; it’s a pivotal moment that reflects the highs and lows of MMA careers under Dana White’s tenure. Fans get to witness the farewell of a beloved champion and potentially the rebirth of a fallen star, underscoring the unpredictable and thrilling nature of the sport.
