49ers Activate Receiver Ricky Piersoll from Puppy List Ahead of Brandon Aiyuk’s Training Camp Start

The San Francisco 49ers are starting training camp with two key receivers sidelined. On Friday, the team announced that wide receivers Ricky Pearsall and Brandon Aiyuk were placed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Pearsall, 24, dealt with a hamstring injury sustained during the offseason in May, which was initially considered minor. It was anticipated that he would be ready to participate in training camp.

As for Aiyuk, his presence on the PUP list is expected as he continues to recover from torn ACL and MCL ligaments in his right knee, an injury he suffered during a 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Last season, Pearsall recorded 31 receptions for 400 yards and three touchdowns across 11 games, including four starts. He was projected to take a larger role in the offense this year, especially with Deebo Samuel recovering from an injury and Aiyuk still working his way back.

Pearsall made his NFL debut after missing time earlier in the previous season due to a gunshot wound and also dealt with hamstring and shoulder issues during last year’s training camp.

The notable beneficiary of Pearsall’s injuries is Jauan Jennings, a fifth-year receiver currently seeking a new contract with the 49ers. If Jennings isn’t re-signed, he may request a trade. With Pearsall and Aiyuk sidelined, Jennings gains significant bargaining power.

Jennings was the 49ers’ second-leading receiver last season, hauling in 77 catches for 975 yards and six touchdowns. According to the Cap data, Jennings is entering the final year of his contract with a $7.5 million salary.

Other players on the active/PUP list include offensive lineman Andre Dillard, defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos, safety Malik Mustapha, and linebacker Curtis Robinson. Offensive lineman Ben Burkett and safety George Odham are on the active/non-football injury list.

Players on the active/PUP list can be activated during training camp but are not cleared to practice at the start. Those who remain on the reserve/PUP list when rosters are reduced to 53 players must sit out at least four games at the start of the season.

The veterans kicked off training camp on Tuesday, with the 49ers scheduled to play a preseason game against the Denver Broncos on August 9th.

Fan Take: This update is significant for NFL fans because the absence of key receivers like Pearsall and Aiyuk could shake up the 49ers’ offensive dynamics and impact their early-season performance. It also highlights how injuries continue to shape team strategies and roster decisions, making the contest for playing time and contract negotiations even more intense.
