Callum Ilott Slams “Muppets” Behind the Wheel During IndyCar Toronto Qualifying Showdown

Callum Ilott, who was on the verge of qualifying for the Fast Six at the IndyCar Indy Toronto race, expressed frustration after the qualifying session. He blamed traffic during his out lap for a poor driving experience that cost him nearly two seconds in pace.

The Prema driver had high hopes of competing in the top qualifying round but ended up qualifying 12th. He moved up to 11th after Scott Dixon received a six-place grid penalty for an engine change last weekend. Ilott’s best lap time was 1:01.88, while Louis set a faster time of 1:00.66 in round two, eliminating Ilott.

Talking to FS1, Ilott said, “I didn’t have a proper lap. It’s frustrating when you’re forced to go slowly on the out lap and end up holding everyone up. Our car was good, but when you’re two seconds behind, it’s tough, especially with a yellow flag on Turn 8. Finishing 12th isn’t terrible, but it feels like others were blocking.”

Earlier this year, Ilott’s best qualifying result was ninth place at Road America, although he dropped to 15th during the race. His teammate Robert Schwartzman, who made headlines by securing pole position for the Indy 500 in May, had a difficult qualifying session in Toronto, finishing 20th and failing to advance beyond the first group stage.

Fan Take: This qualifying setback for Ilott underscores the unpredictable and fiercely competitive nature of IndyCar racing, where traffic and strategy can make or break a driver’s chance. For fans, it highlights the importance of every fraction of a second and how a small delay can ripple through the race, keeping the sport thrilling and uncertain.
