On December 19, 2025, at Monmouth Park in Openport, N.J., Journalism made an impressive comeback to claim the $1 million Haskell Invitational. This marked Journalism’s first race since contending in the Triple Crown, where he was the sole colt to race in all three events, winning the Preakness and finishing second in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.
Starting as the heavy favorite at 2-5 odds, Journalism, ridden by jockey Umberto Rispoli, broke quickly and chased the early leaders. He surged around the final turn, closing in on Gosgar and Goal Orientation, who were battling for the lead. It was expected that Journalism would take control down the stretch, ultimately winning by half a length.
Describing the experience, Rispoli said, “Riding him feels like driving a diesel engine—you never know exactly when he’ll accelerate. It’s incredible to see what he accomplished again today.”
Gosgar secured second place, narrowly ahead of Goal Orientation. This victory marked the sixth win for Journalism in nine starts under Southern California trainer Michael McCarthy. Previously, Journalism also triumphed in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar on November 1st, a race with a $7 million prize.
Journalism paid out $2.80, $2.20, and $2.10 to bettors.
Fan Take: Journalism’s thrilling victory not only cements his status as a top racehorse but also reignites excitement for high-stakes racing among fans. His consistent performance in major events promises to keep the sport captivating and competitive for the foreseeable future.
