Marcus Smart, a seasoned NBA player, has agreed to a deal with the Washington Wizards and is set to sign a two-year contract worth $11 million with the Los Angeles Lakers after passing the exemption, as reported by ESPN. At 31 years old, Smart, who has only participated in 54 games over the last two seasons due to injuries, is known for his exceptional defensive skills, which will strengthen the Lakers’ defense.

Smart, who won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022 and has been named to the all-defensive first team three times, has the option to become a free agent in 2026. This acquisition is viewed as a significant enhancement to the Lakers’ defensive capabilities and backcourt depth.

Throughout his 11-year career in the NBA, Smart has averaged 10.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, earning a reputation as one of the league’s top perimeter defenders with an average of 1.6 steals per game. After being traded midseason from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Wizards in February, he played only 15 games but remains highly respected for his grit and resilience.

Smart started his NBA journey with the Boston Celtics, who picked him sixth overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. He played a pivotal role in anchoring the Celtics’ defense, helping the team reach the playoffs every year during his tenure, including five appearances in the Eastern Conference Finals and a trip to the 2022 NBA Finals.

Fan Take: This signing is a major win for Lakers fans who value defensive tenacity and team grit. Marcus Smart’s presence could shift the balance of power in the NBA by bolstering the Lakers’ backcourt defense, potentially making games more competitive and exciting for fans.
