Jack Dorgerty, a 29-year-old American defenseman, has inked a one-year deal with the Sheffield Steelers, according to an announcement by the EIHL club on Monday. Steelers head coach Aaron Fox praised Dorgerty as a versatile defender who excels at the small, crucial aspects of hockey, highlighting his physical play, defensive stops, and smart shot-blocking abilities.
Dorgerty shared that he was easily convinced to join the Steelers, having heard excellent things about the team and its organization. Adding to his decision was the presence of former teammate Evan Jasper, making Sheffield an ideal choice for him and his family.
Hailing from St. Paul, Minnesota, Dorgerty boasts a decorated background, having won gold at the 2014 IIHF U-18 World Championships and participated in the US National Team Development Program. He played one year of college hockey at the University of Wisconsin before spending a year in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks. Drafted 51st overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, he has yet to play in an NHL regular season game but has experience in the minor leagues within the Predators, Buffalo Sabres, Ottawa Senators, and Boston Bruins systems, including multiple preseason games. Over 317 AHL games, he accumulated 62 points and 156 penalty minutes.
Since 2023, Dorgerty has competed in Europe, with stints in Germany at Kölner Haie and Nuremberg Ice Tigers, as well as in Austria’s capital with the Vienna Capitals. Coach Fox believes Dorgerty will be a great addition to the team, especially in penalty-killing roles. Dorgerty describes himself as a dependable two-way defenseman who thrives in all situations, particularly in penalty kills and critical game moments.
Dorgerty joins a consistent Steelers squad that has not placed lower than third in the past six seasons. Alongside Jasper, the team also features notable players like former NHL prospect Cliff Pu and UK national team captain Robert Dowd.
In related news, Finnish forward Mikkasaromaki, aged 32, signed a one-year contract with the Finnish League club Saipalappein Lanta, and Canadian forward Cliff Pu, 27, also recently agreed to a one-year deal with the Sheffield Steelers.
Fan Take: This signing signals the Steelers’ commitment to strengthening their defensive lineup with experienced talent, promising a more competitive and exciting season for fans. Dorgerty’s international and minor league experience makes him a valuable asset who could influence the team’s success and elevate the overall level of play in the EIHL.
