Edmonton Oilers stars Conor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl recently delighted fans by participating in a casual Beer League game at the Magna Centre in Newmarket, Ontario, near Toronto. McDavid, who grew up playing hockey in Newmarket, returned to his roots wearing the Oilers’ practice jerseys alongside Draisaitl. Although neither player scored goals and McDavid was stopped several times on breakaways, their team ended up losing 6-2 after falling behind 4-0 in the first period.

According to TSN, game officials had been informed ahead of time that McDavid and Draisaitl would be joining the match, adding extra excitement for both players and spectators. While it may have surprised some to see McDavid in a Beer League game, he has actually participated in this league before, even playing in a championship game in 2023 against a team featuring Kings forward Quinton Byfield. McDavid mentioned to ESPN that he has been part of the league for over ten years, dating back to his junior hockey days, and was amused by its recent growth.

This offseason has been eventful for McDavid after the Oilers saw consecutive Stanley Cup Finals defeats to the Florida Panthers. With McDavid and Draisaitl set to become unrestricted free agents next summer, speculation surrounds whether the 2025-26 season will be McDavid’s final one with Edmonton.

Fan Take: This glimpse of McDavid and Draisaitl playing in a grassroots-level game shows their genuine love for hockey beyond the NHL spotlight. For hockey fans, it’s a reminder that even the biggest stars value community and the pure joy of the game, highlighting how the sport connects people at all levels.
