More than 24 years after Manny Pacquiao’s debut win at MGM Grand Garden Arena for the IBF junior featherweight title, the Filipino icon aimed to become the oldest boxer to capture the welterweight championship at the same venue. Yet, at 46 years old, Pacquiao fell short as his fight against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios ended in a majority draw on Saturday night, allowing Barrios to retain his title and leaving Pacquiao without a victory in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao expressed disappointment, believing he had won the fight, describing it as close and praising Barrios for his toughness. He was ahead on all scorecards entering the 10th round, but Barrios won the final three rounds on every card. The crowd of 13,107, many of whom supported Pacquiao, witnessed the scoreboard reading two judges at 114-114 and one judge favoring Barrios 115-113.

After retiring for four years and being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Pacquiao returned to the ring at 46, showing flashes of his former self early in the fight. However, he slowed down in the middle rounds as the younger Barrios began to exert control. Pacquiao emphasized the need to keep training and expressed interest in a rematch, proud to represent Filipino boxing heritage.

Barrios, with a record of 29-2-2, had only lost to top-level fighters but had mixed recent performances, including a draw and a win in his last two bouts. WBC rules allowed Barrios a title defense opportunity after Pacquiao’s return, even though Pacquiao had nearly retired again. Barrios described Pacquiao’s stamina and skill as extraordinary, acknowledging the tough challenge he faced.

Statistically, Pacquiao landed 101 out of 577 punches (17.5%) and Barrios landed 120 out of 658 (18.2%). While Barrios landed more punches overall, Pacquiao landed more power punches, 81 to Barrios’ 75. Despite fatigue in the later rounds, Pacquiao displayed his legendary skill and heart throughout the fight.

Barrios expressed eagerness for a rematch, calling the bout significant for boxing. Since Pacquiao also signaled he’s open to continuing his career, fans might see another chapter in this historic rivalry. Pacquiao hopes his effort inspires older fighters to continue competing with discipline and passion.

Fan Take: This fight showcased the enduring spirit and skill of a true legend, proving age is no barrier for greatness in boxing. For fight fans, it highlights how the sport honors its past while creating exciting new matchups that bridge generations.
