The Moto2 rider market is reportedly heating up behind the scenes. Alonso Lopez has agreed to switch teams for the upcoming season, with only the official announcement remaining. According to SkyItalia, Lopez will leave Speed Up Racing to join the Moto2 team at Gresini Racing in 2026. This move means he will replace Boscoscro at Karex.

Lopez’s transfer to Gresini is motivated by his ambition to advance toward a MotoGP promotion, the report explains. Meanwhile, there was competition for his signature, as the Italtrans team—potentially losing Diogo Moreira to MotoGP in 2026—showed interest in Lopez. However, Gresini made it clear to Lopez that he was their top priority, persuading him to quickly finalize the deal.

If Italtrans loses Moreira to MotoGP next season, they will have to find a new rider. Lopez is ending his time with Speed Up Racing on a positive note, as noted by Sky Italia, with 17 podium finishes and three race wins over four years in Moto2. Currently, the Spanish rider holds 14th place in the Moto2 standings. Joining Gresini offers him a promising opportunity to pursue a clear path to the premier class.
