Luka Doncic is proving to be a significant playmaker both on and off the basketball court. His influence was instrumental in bringing Marcus Smart to the Los Angeles Lakers, a move that involved teamwork but had Doncic playing a vital role. During his introductory press conference with the Lakers, Smart credited Doncic’s recruitment efforts as a key reason for his decision to join Los Angeles after finalizing a trade from the Washington Wizards.

Smart explained, “It means a lot to hear Luka say he really values my help. He called me to check out what I bring to the team and to see if I wanted to be part of something special he’s building here.” At 31 years old, Smart signed a two-year, $11 million contract after completing the trade with Washington and the Lakers. The 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year is expected to be a major contributor alongside LeBron James and Doncic.

Describing his new teammate, Smart praised, “They are two of the best players in the game, both with the highest basketball IQ I’ve ever witnessed in this era.” Smart spent the first nine years of his career with the Boston Celtics, spent some time with Memphis Grizzlies and Wizards, and is now embarking on a fresh chapter with the Lakers. He shared, “I’ve been on the opposite side of Luka’s incredible play before, so joining forces with him feels like the right move.”

The Lakers finished the regular season with a 50-32 record, securing the third seed in the Western Conference but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Smart expressed feeling motivated and determined to do more after the team’s recent disappointments. He intends to bring his signature defense-first style to the Lakers, saying, “My role is to be a relentless defender, bring strength, leadership, basketball IQ, and pest-like intensity. Ultimately, the goal is to compete to win a championship.”
