Toto Wolff Sets the Record Straight on Max Verstappen’s Future, Reveals His “Priority” Driver

Toto Wolff has disclosed his preferred driver lineup for Mercedes next year. Despite rumors connecting him to Max Verstappen, the Mercedes team principal expressed his confidence in the current pairing of George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Although Russell has yet to finalize his contract for 2026, and Wolff has shown some interest in Red Bull’s Verstappen, he clarified his intentions ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. Speaking to Austrian broadcaster ORF, Wolff said, "Discussions have been ongoing for weeks, so everything is current. Our clear priority is to keep George and Andrea." He also acknowledged Max Verstappen’s talents and future plans but implied that there are no surprises in their approach.

Currently, Verstappen is contracted with Red Bull until 2028 but has a contractual escape clause, which has fueled speculation about a potential move. Red Bull’s recent struggles with the RB21 car compared to McLaren have also caused Verstappen to consider other options. Verstappen presently ranks third in the Formula 1 standings behind Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

Rumors of secret talks between Wolff and Verstappen on Sardinia circulated after F1 fans noticed their private jets in the same area, and Ralph Schumacher fueled the speculation. However, Wolff dismissed the rumors, stating that just because they vacation nearby, it doesn’t imply any collaboration: "We’ve always ended up choosing the same holiday spots by chance."

Russell has consistently stated that driving for Mercedes in 2026 is his only plan. Though his new contract is not yet signed, Wolff’s commitment suggests it’s forthcoming. The upcoming 2026 F1 regulations promise a fresh start for all teams, giving them a chance to establish dominance with new cars. This means talks about signing Verstappen might pick up again in 2027, after teams see how the new regulations play out.

Fan Take: This announcement reassures Mercedes fans about the team’s continuity and focus on its trusted drivers, which is crucial for stability in a year of big regulatory changes. However, the lingering Verstappen rumors keep the door open for one of the most exciting potential moves in F1, which could dramatically shake up the championship landscape.
