FC Barcelona Goalkeeper Mark Andretelstegen to Undergo Back Surgery

Mark Andretelstegen, the goalkeeper for FC Barcelona, is set to miss at least three months of competition as he prepares for surgery to address a back injury. The injury has kept him from training with the squad after they resumed practice last week.

On Thursday, the 33-year-old shareda heartfelt message on Instagram regarding his health struggles. Expressing his love for the club and its fans, Ter Stegen stated:

"I feel great both physically and mentally, yet unfortunately, I’m not free from pain. After thorough discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external specialists, we’ve concluded that surgery is the quickest and safest path to full recovery. Following my last back surgery, I was back in action in nearly two months—66 days, to be exact—however, this time the doctor anticipates a recovery period of about three months as a precaution to avoid taking risks."

He further expressed his emotional struggle, saying, "It hurts not to be able to assist the team during this time, but thankfully, the rehabilitation process is manageable and progress is being made. I will keep you posted on my recovery, and I sincerely thank you for your support. Rest assured, I will return!"

Ter Stegen’s absence comes after he played only eight La Liga matches last season due to a knee issue. This season, he managed 28 appearances and achieved 15 clean sheets across domestic competitions.

In light of his injury, Barcelona has signed Wojciech Szczęsny from retirement. Despite this setback, the team won the La Liga title with a solid record of 28 wins, 4 draws, and 6 losses, lifted the Copa del Rey, and reached the Champions League semi-finals before being eliminated by Inter.

With Ter Stegen out, the team will rely on Szczęsny and Joan Garcia.

Since joining FC Barcelona in 2014 for €12 million, Ter Stegen has been the team’s primary goalkeeper since 2016, making 422 appearances and winning 17 trophies.

Barcelona will return to the field on July 31 for a friendly match against FC Seoul in South Korea.

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer fans as Ter Stegen has been a key player for FC Barcelona, and his absence could impact the team’s chances in upcoming matches. His recovery will be closely watched, as it reflects not only his importance to the squad but also the broader challenges athletes face in managing injuries in professional sports.
