Jonathan Kuminga Departs Warriors: A Major Move in NBA Free Agency Spotlight Featuring Ben Simmons and the Knicks

NBA free agency resembles a game of musical chairs, but the music is slowing as most available funds have already been spent and rosters are filling up. Teams still looking to fill spots might not offer significant playing time or opportunities, so by late July, players without contracts will struggle to find attractive deals before the season starts.

This situation poses challenges for the 2025 free agent group, which was considered weak in July yet still includes some notable players. Let’s explore a few skilled and promising players still on the market and consider potential fits for them.

Russell Westbrook, who had his best season recently with Denver, wasn’t re-signed by the Nuggets. He’s searching for a team with modest goals since his attempts with teams like the Rockets, Lakers, Clippers, and Nuggets have been unsuccessful. Sacramento appears to be a likely destination. Despite having players like Dennis Schroeder, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Malik Monk, and Schroeder, who already fill certain roles, the Kings could benefit from Westbrook’s ability to push the pace and create scoring opportunities. However, with a crowded roster and existing players in similar roles, Westbrook might be nearing the end of his NBA journey, finding fits only in teams that lack playoff aspirations or aren’t focused on rebuilding.

Boston presents an interesting case as they currently operate in a low-pressure gap year, using players primarily as ball handlers. However, coach Joe Mazzulla prefers versatility, and players unwilling to attack the paint may not fit well. The Knicks could be a better match for Ben Simmons, who thrives surrounded by shooters like Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordan Clarkson. Simmons provides defensive flexibility and can be a valuable bench player despite the high-pressure environment of Madison Square Garden, making this a low-risk, high-reward possibility.

Golden State is reportedly keen on re-signing Al Horford, though financial constraints remain due to uncertainty around Jonathan Kuminga’s future. Horford fits well with the Warriors’ system that favors smart, versatile veterans capable of defensive switches and effective shooting. Meanwhile, Moses Moody has lost favor with coach Steve Kerr and sees limited minutes, highlighting the need for a reliable secondary offensive-minded defender like Payton, who contributed well in previous stints with Golden State.

Minnesota appears set to prioritize guard positions in light of recent player changes, with veterans like Mike Conley acting as mentors for younger guards like Rob Dillingham and Terrence Shannon Jr. General Manager Tim Connelly’s creative trading attempts, including the pursuit of Kevin Durant, suggest flexibility in the roster to accommodate promising young talent.

Restricted free agents, like Jonathan Kuminga, face unique challenges because their original teams can match any offers, limiting early market movement. Kuminga’s desire to leave Golden State might lead to a one-year qualifying offer this season, with sign-and-trade likely. Miami and Phoenix have shown interest, with Phoenix’s need for young, versatile players aligning with Kuminga’s skill set. However, financial complexities and fit remain significant considerations in any potential trade.

Milwaukee, having freed up funds by not pursuing Damian Lillard and signing Miles Turner instead, still lacks scoring guards who can contribute 20+ points per game. While they’ve signed promising players for depth, they might need an offensive boost via a player like Thomas, who previously showed scoring prowess alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. Milwaukee may trade assets like Kyle Kuzma and future draft picks to assemble a stronger, more appealing roster that could keep their star player long-term.

Fan Take: This free agency period highlights the intricate balancing act teams face between talent, finances, and fit, especially for players on the fringe of rosters. Basketball fans should watch closely as these moves could reshape team dynamics, offering emerging players opportunities and signaling shifts in how franchises build toward championships in the coming seasons.
