Lewis Hamilton Urges Respect for Christian Horner, While Applauding Red Bull’s Remarkable Legacy

Lewis Hamilton reflected on Christian Horner’s recent departure from Red Bull, revealing that they initially didn’t get along when they first met, but he recognized Horner’s significant and somewhat unexpected impact on Formula 1.

During the two-week interval between the UK and Belgian Grands Prix, it was announced that Horner had parted ways with Red Bull. Horner had been the team principal since the team’s inception in 2005. Under his leadership, Red Bull secured multiple titles with drivers like Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, making Horner one of the most successful team principals in the sport.

However, the last year has been difficult for Horner. The team was rocked by a scandal related to allegations of inappropriate behavior, coinciding with the departures of key figures Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley. Despite Verstappen winning the 2024 driver championship, Red Bull’s overall performance on the track has been inconsistent. Horner also faced criticism over his management of Sergio Perez, who was replaced by Liam Lawson late last year after being given a new contract earlier in the season.

Hamilton, who has often been one of Red Bull’s biggest competitors in Formula 1—first against Vettel in the early 2010s and then notably during the intense clashes with Verstappen and Red Bull in 2021—commented on Horner’s exit during a FIA press conference in Belgium. He admitted that he and Horner didn’t initially connect back in 2005 but praised Horner’s achievements and legacy. Hamilton recalled plans to meet with Horner in 2005 at his office while discussing GP2, and expressed admiration for the transformation Horner brought to the team. He wished Horner the best moving forward.

Fan Take: Christian Horner’s departure marks the end of an era for Red Bull, signaling potential shifts in team dynamics and strategies. For racing fans, this change could reshape the competitive landscape, opening opportunities for new leadership styles and rivalries that may ultimately influence the future direction of Formula 1.
