Mariners Acquire Josh Naylor from Diamondbacks, Parting with Two Pitchers in Trade

The Seattle Mariners made a trade on Thursday, acquiring Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity since the deal had not yet been officially announced. Naylor, 28, has been performing well this season with a .292 batting average, 11 home runs, and 59 RBIs. Originally, Naylor was traded to the Cleveland Guardians during the offseason.

In exchange, the Diamondbacks received left-handed Brandyn Garcia, who has played twice for the Mariners this season, along with minor league left-hander Ashton Izzi. The Mariners hold a 54-48 record, placing them second in the AL West and in the second wild-card spot. Conversely, the Diamondbacks have a disappointing 50-53 record and are expected to trade players ahead of the July 31 deadline. Players such as third baseman Eugenio Suarez and pitchers Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen, all with contracts expiring soon, might be on the move. It’s worth noting that Naylor was an MLB All-Star last year, achieving a career-high 31 home runs and 108 RBIs with the Guardians.

Fan Take: This trade could be a pivotal move for the Mariners as they look to strengthen their lineup for a playoff push. Baseball fans should keep an eye on how Naylor’s addition impacts the team’s dynamics and whether it sparks a shift in the competitive balance within the AL West.
