Should Two Elite Forward Prospects Earn a Spot on the Penguins’ Opening Night Roster?

Although the Pittsburgh Penguins weren’t heavily focused on contending for the Stanley Cup in the 2025-26 season, they remained quite active during the offseason. Many are anticipating trade developments involving Eric Carlson, Rickard Raquel, or Brian Last, though GM Kyle Dubas has already made several smaller roster moves aimed at filling gaps, swapping out players, or preparing for future changes.

As of now, the Penguins’ active roster includes 13 forwards, eight defensemen, and two goaltenders, with two notable prospects—young forwards Vil Koivunen and Rutger McGroarty—not officially on the roster but making waves. Koivunen, 22, demonstrated strong potential by scoring almost a point per game in his eight appearances alongside stars like Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. Meanwhile, McGroarty, 21, made an impactful debut before a lower-body injury cut his season short, scoring three points in five games playing with Crosby.

The team is in a rebuilding phase, aiming to identify which near-NHL-ready players will be part of their future core. Both Koivunen and McGroarty showcased great promise in their limited NHL action, proving they can compete at this level. However, with the current roster moves, neither’s place in the opening night lineup is assured, given the Penguins’ efforts to fill out the roster.

The Penguins, led by Dubas, face decisions on young players before the regular season starts against the New York Rangers on October 7. Dubas emphasized the importance of giving young talent opportunities, though they must earn their spots and not be handed roles prematurely, to maintain the team’s tradition and standards.

Koivunen and McGroarty will compete for roster spots alongside the current forwards, including established players like Crosby, Malkin, Rust, Raquel, and several others. Additional prospects such as Tristan Broz, Avery Hayes, Sam Poulin, and Filip Hallander are also in the mix. If no trades happen before the season begins, securing a place won’t be easy.

Realistically, Koivunen’s age and strong AHL season make him a strong candidate to join the NHL roster full-time, while McGroarty’s impressive growth and chemistry with Crosby give him a solid chance, though he might start in the AHL to continue his development. Both deserve spots on the NHL roster and should be expected to make the team if they perform well in training camp.

Fans are encouraged to watch not only Koivunen and McGroarty but also other emerging players like Philip Harlander, who could surprise this fall.

Fan Take: This news is exciting for hockey fans because it highlights the Penguins’ commitment to developing young talent and building a competitive future. Seeing promising prospects like Koivunen and McGroarty push for NHL roles keeps the sport dynamic and offers hope for the team’s resurgence in upcoming seasons.
