Step into the GM’s Shoes: Three Bold Trade Deadline Moves to Fuel the ‘ Quest for Back-to-Back World Series Titles

Major League Baseball’s have set high standards, consistently reaching the playoffs every year since 2012. Over the past 12 seasons, they’ve secured 11 division titles, four pennants, and two World Series championships, creating expectations that anything less than a postseason victory is a letdown. Although the are heavily favored to win the NL West again (-1600 odds at BetMGM), the real goal this trade deadline isn’t just playoff qualification but clinching another World Series title, with odds at +140 for the NL to win it all.

Currently, the are facing struggles, having lost 11 of their last 14 games after leading by nine games on July 3rd, bringing their NL West lead down to 3.5 games. Despite this, many still expect them to win the division, focusing instead on strengthening their roster for October. Injuries to key starters have been a challenge, but their pitching lineup is deep, with playoff-caliber starters like Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Clayton Kershaw, Shohei Ohtani, and Emmett Sheehan available. GM Brandon Gomez emphasized their readiness to add pieces as needed but highlighted the strength they already possess.

One significant area of concern is the bullpen, which ranks 24th in the league with a 4.41 ERA, worsening as the months have progressed (April/May 3.71/4.35 ERA rising to July’s 5.30 ERA). Injuries have plagued key relievers including Tanner Scott, Michael Kopech, Evan Phillips, Brusdar Graterol, and Blake Treinen, making bullpen upgrades a priority. A top target could be Duran, who has excelled as a closer with a 1.94 ERA this season and is controlled by his team through 2027—a more valuable asset than short-term rental pitchers. Other bullpen options include Ryan Helsley, another closer likely available as a rental, and promising arms like Griffin Jax, Cade Smith, and Felix Bautista.

Additionally, the should look to block rivals from acquiring Eugenio Suárez, a free agent at season’s end who leads the NL in home runs and RBIs. With ’ third baseman Max Muncy injured, and backup Tommy Edman and Hyun Jin Kim covering multiple roles, adding a player of Suárez’s caliber would solidify their infield and offensive depth. Though not a necessity, acquiring Suárez would send a bold message to competitors, asserting the ‘ dominance and willingness to outbid rivals for top talent.

Fan Take: This trade deadline could be pivotal for the as they balance injury challenges with a roster loaded with talent aiming for another championship. The moves they make now will not only determine their postseason fate but also shape the competitive landscape of baseball for years to come, keeping fans on edge and the sport thrilling.
