Prescott Backs Parsons and Defensive End, Saying They’re Due for a Big Payday

Todd Archer, an ESPN NFL reporter who covers the Dallas Cowboys, shared insights from Oxnard, CA about Mika Parsons’ ongoing wait for a contract extension with the team. Drawing from experience, Dak Prescott, who recently secured a historic four-year, $240 million deal with the Cowboys just before the 2024 season began, empathizes with Parsons’ situation. Prescott acknowledges that there’s no perfect way to navigate contract talks but believes Parsons deserves to be rewarded for his efforts.

Parsons has been present during the early days of training camp but has not participated in practice due to back tension. Despite a meeting with Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones in March, where they agreed on the duration and guaranteed money for Parsons’ deal, no progress has been made since. This delay is notable as other top pass rushers like TJ Watt, Myles Garrett, and Maxx Crosby have all recently secured contract extensions.

Though disappointed by the stalled negotiations, Parsons remains loyal to the Cowboys, the team that drafted him in 2021. Prescott mentioned that contract discussions have increasingly become prolonged processes for the Cowboys, affecting key players such as him, Zach Martin, CeeDee Lamb, and now Parsons. Jones, during a recent press conference, seemed unconcerned about the unresolved contract with Parsons and highlighted that contracts don’t guarantee player health, a stance Parsons found puzzling.

Meanwhile, CeeDee Lamb signed a contract last year to become the second-highest paid receiver in the NFL, despite missing much of his training camp. Prescott emphasized Parsons’ importance to the team, highlighting his role as a great teammate and expressing confidence that Parsons deserves appropriate recognition and compensation.

Fan Take: This ongoing contract saga matters because it highlights the complex and often prolonged nature of NFL player negotiations, even for standout talents like Mika Parsons. How the Cowboys handle this situation could set a precedent for future deals and affect team chemistry, which NFL fans will be keen to watch as the season progresses.
