Udonis Haslem Picks His Top Center: Joel Embiid vs. Nikola Jokic Showdown

Udonis Haslem has weighed in on who he believes is the top center between Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic. Both have been MVP contenders multiple times, with Embiid finally edging out Jokic to win the MVP in 2023. Embiid, a seven-time All-Star, played only 19 games last season due to injury problems, and there’s no confirmed return date yet. The Philadelphia 76ers are hopeful for his full recovery to regain his dominant presence on the court.

Embiid and Jokic have highlighted the critical role of big men in today’s NBA, being key pillars for their teams. Haslem, a former Miami Heat star, who faced Embiid past his prime, praised Embiid’s dominance in the paint, scoring ability, and defensive impact. On OG’s podcast, Haslem said he appreciates what Jokic can do and admits Jokic is unstoppable. However, he wants to see Embiid fully locked in — healthy, conditioned, focused, and willing to sacrifice for his team, which he believes would make Embiid the best center in the league. Haslem acknowledges both players’ greatness but emphasizes the potential of a fully committed Embiid.

Injuries have been a recurring challenge for Embiid throughout his career. Despite this, Haslem is convinced that a dedicated, healthy Embiid could surpass Jokic. Embiid himself recently discussed his career, recovery process, and addressed a locker room issue from last season in an ESPN interview.

Embiid has played through multiple injuries, especially in his lower body. Having competed in the Olympics last year with minor injuries, his condition worsened afterward. At 31, recovery might not be immediate, and the 76ers cannot afford to rely on a frequently injured star. His health is crucial alongside Paul George, who is also recovering from an offseason injury. The team’s success next season heavily depends on both players’ full recoveries.

If Embiid can maintain his fitness and perform as he normally does, it would provide a massive boost to the 76ers. His presence, combined with George, could turn the team’s fate from a potential disaster to a strong contender.

Fan Take: This debate between Embiid and Jokic highlights the evolving significance of dominant centers in modern basketball. For fans, seeing these two giants battle not only adds excitement but also showcases how the game continues to evolve around versatile and impactful big men.
