On Saturday at Madison Square Garden, 22-year-old Xander Zayas made history by becoming the youngest current world champion in the junior middleweight division, capturing the vacant WBO title with a commanding victory over Jorge Garcia Perez. Zayas (22-0, 13 KOs) dominated from the start, using agile footwork to neutralize Garcia Perez’s strong attacks and controlling the fight throughout. The judges unanimously scored the bout in Zayas’ favor (116-112, 118-110, 119-109), ending Garcia Perez’s eight-fight winning streak.

In the sixth round, Zayas showed his skill by avoiding Garcia Perez’s right hand, which caused the Mexican fighter to stumble over the ropes. Zayas continued to outmaneuver and outland his opponent, maintaining a strong lead supported by punch statistics revealing Zayas with higher accuracy and volume—landing 38% of his punches compared to Garcia Perez’s 22%, and landing significantly more jabs and power shots. Garcia Perez struggled to keep up, and despite a brief resurgence in the eighth round, Zayas regained control to close out the fight with precision.

Zayas expressed pride in representing Puerto Rico at the highest level and carrying his homeland’s pride with him. Currently ranked eighth in ESPN’s Junior Middleweight Rankings, he is the youngest world champion in his division by nearly two years.

In the co-main event, Blues “Shushu” Carrington earned a unanimous decision victory over Mateus Heita to claim the vacant WBC interim featherweight title. Carrington (16-0, 9 KOs) steadily took control after the early rounds, landing consistent body and head shots, which eventually wore down Heita. The judges scored the fight decisively for Carrington (120-108, 119-109, 119-109), handing Heita his first career loss in his first fight outside Africa.

Following his win, Carrington challenged WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza, signaling intentions for a future title showdown. Additionally, Emilia Nio Vargas, son of former light middleweight champion Fernando Vargas, boosted his record to 15-0 with a quick knockout in just 42 seconds over Alexander Espinoza, marking his 13th career knockout and sixth consecutive.

Fan Take: Xander Zayas’ emergence as the youngest world champion injects fresh excitement into the junior middleweight division and highlights the ongoing brilliance of Puerto Rican boxing talent. His rise, alongside Carrington’s breakthrough, signals a dynamic shift and promises thrilling matchups, making fans eager for what’s next in the sport.
