Basel, Switzerland — Lucy Bronze has disclosed that she competed in the entire tournament with a broken tibia while aiding England in defending their European Championship title.
Bronze was outstanding throughout the Euro tournament, reinforcing the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 triumph with another victory in Switzerland.
She has stood out in the UK and received considerable admiration from her teammates for her hard work and motivating nature.
Bronze played a crucial role in landing the penalty that secured their place in the finals during the quarterfinals against Sweden.
Although she sustained her injury during the match against Spain in extra time, she revealed the severity of her foot injury only after England triumphed in the penalty shootout.
“I actually fractured my tibia and played the entire tournament, but then I hurt my knee on my other leg,” Bronze shared with the BBC.
“That’s why my teammates praised me after the Swedish match; I was in considerable pain. If that’s what it takes to compete for England, then I’m all in.”
She also mentioned that it was “extremely painful.”
Bronze currently holds the record for the most appearances by an English player in major tournaments with 36 caps.

“I truly believe we didn’t lose our faith in ourselves,” said Bronze. “Despite external noise, we stuck together and pushed through to secure the penalty win.”
“Scoring a penalty is an incredible feeling, while missing one is a terrifying way to end a final. I remember many players from Barça who missed penalties in the past. It’s tough to relive that experience.”
“This time, it was for England. We showed resilience today, believing in ourselves regardless of what others say.”
