Former Blackhawks Defender Stands Strong as a Top Left-Side Free Agent

As August arrives, many of the most notable unrestricted free agents (UFAs) have already secured new teams. However, several experienced UFAs remain unsigned. Among the prominent UFA defensemen still available is former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman, Riley Rutta.

Considering Rutta’s track record, it’s reasonable to believe he could still secure another NHL contract. The two-time Stanley Cup winner has been a reliable defensive presence throughout his career, making him a strong candidate for teams seeking additional depth on the right side of their defense.

Last season, Rutta played for the San Jose Sharks, tallying three goals, six assists, nine points, and 81 blocked shots across 54 games. Although his offensive output declined from the 2023-24 season, his defensive contributions remained impactful. This performance might earn him a one-year deal or a professional tryout (PTO) ahead of training camp.

Rutta began his NHL career with the Blackhawks, appearing in 80 games, where he scored eight goals, added 18 assists for a total of 26 points, and accumulated 36 penalty minutes along with 85 blocked shots. His tenure with Chicago ended when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2018-19 season.

During the 2024 NHL offseason, the Chicago Blackhawks signed Teuvo Teräväinen to a three-year, $16.2 million contract. This move reflects the Blackhawks’ hope that Teräväinen will become a key contributor in their top six as the team continues its rebuilding process.

Fan Take: The ongoing availability of experienced defensemen like Rutta highlights opportunities for teams aiming to boost their blue line depth without breaking the bank. For hockey fans, these signings and potential tryouts signal exciting shifts that could influence team dynamics and competitiveness in the upcoming season.
