Ottawa Senator’s Reality Outshines Even Their Wildest Dreams

Nick Matinpalo, a defenseman for the Ottawa Senators, has had an unexpectedly successful rookie NHL season. The 25-year-old Finnish player was undrafted and had just finished his first professional season in North America, playing 67 games with the Belleville Senators, scoring 14 points, and appearing in four games without points for Ottawa. Initially, few believed Matinpalo would secure a regular spot in the NHL last season.

After starting the year in Belleville with 24 AHL games under his belt, he surpassed teammates Jacob Bernard Docker and Travis Hamonic—who were sidelined with injuries—and played 41 NHL games along with all six Stanley Cup playoff games for Ottawa. He also represented Finland at the NHL Fornations Faceoff in February and the World Hockey Championship in May. To cap off his breakout year, Matinpalo signed a two-year, one-way contract worth $875,000 per year with Ottawa shortly after the team’s playoff run ended. The quick signing seemed to affirm his place in the NHL.

Despite the contract security, Matinpalo was told by the team to train hard and approach the next training camp as if he wasn’t guaranteed a roster spot, focusing on daily improvement. This tough message likely prepared him for challenges ahead, especially as Ottawa recently acquired right-shot defensemen Lassi Thomson, Jordan Spence, and first-round pick Carter Verhaeghe, all of whom compete for NHL playing time. Nick Jensen’s return to health also complicates Matinpalo’s path forward.

Although competition for NHL defense roles is fiercer, Matinpalo remains confident and motivated, acknowledging that this might be his last chance to solidify a spot in the league. Reflecting on his journey from underestimated newcomer to NHL contender, he emphasizes the importance of perseverance and continuous growth. The two-year contract gives him valuable time to develop, and given his steep learning curve last season, he’s expected to be a strong contender at the upcoming training camp.

Fan Take: Nick Matinpalo’s rise underscores how hard work and determination can overcome initial doubts, making him a player to watch in the Senators’ future. His journey is a reminder that talent can emerge from unexpected places, inspiring fans and adding depth to the sport.
