In Baltimore, Lamar Jackson took control near his 30-yard line during a crucial drive, attempting to turn a 20-17 deficit around. The drive began well with a precise deep pass to Keith Kirkwood, but Jackson couldn’t complete the catch. Soon after, rookie defensive back Malaki Starks caused an incomplete pass by tightly covering wide receiver Dayton Wade. This was followed by an untouched Marlon Humphrey rushing an opposing cornerback, culminating in a critical sack that stalled the drive. Given the game situation, the sack was a severe setback for the Ravens.

However, the play perfectly suited the Ravens’ training camp intentions. The team is simultaneously testing new kickers and transitioning from longtime franchise staples. Rookie Tyler Loop successfully kicked a 56-yard field goal to tie the game. Despite limited space between the uprights, Loop showed no hesitation in front of 26,052 fans at M&T Bank Stadium during his first home practice, finishing an impressive day going 6-for-6 in field goal attempts, including a 60-yarder.

Coach John Harbaugh praised Loop’s performance, giving him top marks and expressing confidence in the rookie’s capabilities. Drafted in the sixth round, Loop might soon carry significant pressure as the Ravens released veteran kicker Justin Tucker amid offseason controversy. General Manager Eric DeCosta called the decision to release Tucker a “soccer” move.

Loop’s standout day offers comfort to Ravens fans, especially following the release of another rookie kicker, John Hoyland. Harbaugh, a former special teams coordinator, noted the difference in kicking conditions between practice and stadium but emphasized the value of real-game-like practice scenarios.

As the preseason progresses with no real consequences for misses yet, Loop’s promising start could prove memorable if he secures the clutch kicking role this season.

Additional practice highlights included Lamar Jackson showcasing his speed, accuracy, and football intellect in drills, such as escaping pressure and scoring a running touchdown. In red zone practice, Jackson completed perfect touchdown passes to Mark Andrews and Derrick Henry. Defensive back Jayle Alexander impressed by disrupting plays and competing well against elite receivers like Deandre Hopkins, demonstrating strong talent and confidence. Other standouts included offensive line adjustments, defensive struggles in the middle line, and emerging wide receiver talents aiming to break into the roster.

Overall, the Ravens appear to be in solid shape with most of last year’s starters returning and promising new talent pushing for roles.

Fan Take: This glimpse into the Ravens’ camp highlights the game-changing potential of rookies like Tyler Loop alongside established stars like Lamar Jackson. NFL fans should watch closely, as such developments can signal a shift in team dynamics and exciting moments ahead in the season.
