2025 NFL Projections: Travis Hunter Shines as Starting Wide Receiver and Backup Cornerback

Travis Hunter appears on both offense and defense in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ depth chart. Hunter, who played as a wide receiver and cornerback in college, was drafted by Jacksonville after a season at Jackson State and two seasons at Colorado. Since joining the Jaguars, new head coach Liam Cohen has been deploying Hunter at both positions, listing him as a starting wide receiver and a backup cornerback in the team’s initial unofficial depth chart. This suggests that early in the season, Hunter will primarily be involved in catching passes from quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

As of August 5th, several betting odds on Hunter’s performance are available on Fanduel Sportsbook, including odds for surpassing 1,000 receiving yards (+230), achieving over 75 receptions and 2 interceptions (+250), and scoring more than 10 combined touchdowns on offense and defense (+700).

Though Hunter hasn’t played an NFL down yet, his college experience is impressive, with 2,625 snaps making him the most decorated player in Colorado football history. During his time there, he notched 153 receptions for 1,979 yards and 20 touchdowns, and defensively recorded 66 tackles, seven interceptions, and forced fumbles. His college career earned him prestigious awards like the Heisman Trophy, AP College Football Player of the Year, and Chuck Bednarik Award.

Fan Take: Travis Hunter’s dual-role potential marks an exciting evolution in the NFL, blending offensive prowess with defensive skills—a rarity in modern football. For fans, his success could redefine positional versatility and influence how teams build rosters going forward.
