Matthew Schafer from Root Island Ready to Make His Move with Entry-Level Contract Signed

The New York Islanders have secured their first overall draft pick, Matthew Schaefer, with a three-year entry-level contract signed on Monday. Despite not turning 18 until September 5th, the contract is fully valid, though signing it disqualifies Schaefer from playing NCAA hockey this fall.

Schaefer expressed his strong desire to play in the NHL as soon as possible, telling reporters after throwing the first pitch at a New York Mets game that his goal is firmly set on the NHL rather than college hockey. With the NCAA option off the table, the Islanders face several paths regarding his development under the current collective bargaining agreement that prohibits him from playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) before he turns 20.

Schaefer’s three options are:

1. Playing full-time in the NHL: If Schaefer proves himself during training camp and preseason, he could earn a spot for the 2025-26 season, potentially filling a bottom-pairing role left by Scott Mayfield or Adam Boqvist. Even limited NHL ice time would give him valuable experience, but once he plays more than 10 games, it counts as burning a year of his entry-level contract.

2. Playing up to 9 games, then returning to juniors: Young players often get a 9-game trial in the NHL to prove their readiness. If Schaefer can’t secure a permanent spot, he would be sent back to the Erie Otters in the OHL to get more ice time and develop further. He only played 17 games last season due to health issues, so the Islanders must carefully consider which environment best supports his growth.

3. Playing over 10 games but still returning to juniors: Although rare and usually seen as wasting a year of contract control, Schaefer might play more than 10 NHL games before being sent back to juniors if his development calls for it.

Overall, the Islanders are keen to give Schaefer every chance to make the NHL roster, as he addresses a clear defensive need for the team. His ability to handle the physicality of the NHL while maintaining solid play will be key in earning and keeping his spot.

Fan Take: Matthew Schaefer’s signing is a thrilling moment for Islanders fans who are eager to see a fresh defensive talent contributing at the NHL level soon. His development path could set a precedent for how highly-touted young defensemen transition to the pros, impacting the future talent pipeline across the league.
