Fluminense, a team in Brazil’s Serie A, is poised to acquire forward Santiago Moreno from the Portland Timbers for a transfer fee of $5.5 million, with an additional $500,000 contingent on reaching specific performance targets.

Insiders suggest that the final agreement will restrict Moreno’s transfer to Brazil.

If the deal goes through, it would put an end to the tumultuous negotiations that led to Moreno missing the Timbers’ League Cup match against Club America on Wednesday, while discussions between Fluminense and Portland were still underway.

Portland has described Moreno’s absence as “unclear,” with both clubs threatening to involve MLS should player discipline be necessary. Initially, insiders mentioned that Fluminense’s offer fell short of the Timbers’ expectations, yet the transaction seems close to completion despite Moreno’s absence from the match.

The 25-year-old midfielder joined the Timbers in 2021 from Colombian club America de Cali, where he began his professional journey. With one international cap for Colombia, Moreno has featured in 136 league and playoff matches, netting 21 goals and providing 19 assists.

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer fans as it highlights the growing global interest in MLS players, showcasing their potential to compete at higher levels abroad. It could also signal a trend where teams increasingly invest in their rosters, enhancing the competitive landscape of both MLS and international soccer.
