Shane Van Gisbergen Reigns Supreme on Nasker Road with Victory at Watkins Glen

On Sunday, Shane Van Gisbergen made NASCAR history by winning his fourth Cup Series race of the season, dominating once again at Watkins Glen International. Driving for Trackhouse Racing, he joined 2020 champion Chase Elliott and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon as the only drivers to win four straight Cup races on road and street courses.

Unlike his earlier wins in Mexico City, Chicago, and Sonoma where he started from pole position, Van Gisbergen began this race in second place after being squeezed by Ryan Branny in qualifying. The New Zealander took the lead on lap 25 and maintained a flawless pace on the 2.45-mile road course, finishing first after a final pit stop with 27 laps remaining. He led the last 17 laps and secured victory by over 11 seconds ahead of Christopher Bell, with Chris Boucher, William Byron, and Chase Briscoe trailing.

With five wins in only 38 Cup Series races, Van Gisbergen ranks just behind Chase Elliott with seven and Kyle Larson with six wins on road courses. This triumph validates Trackhouse Racing’s recent decision to sign him to a multi-year contract extension.

Meanwhile, Ty Gibbs faced a challenging race, spinning John H. Nemeshek in the second half of Stage 2 and expressing frustration over his Toyota’s handling and strategy. Chris Gabehart, the competitive director at Joe Gibbs Racing who now advises Gibbs’ team, encouraged him to focus and trust the team’s approach despite the setbacks. Gibbs, the grandson of team owner Joe Gibbs, won the 2022 Xfinity Series Championship and is continuing to prove himself in the Cup Series, where his teammates Chase Briscoe, Denny Hamlin, and Christopher Bell have already secured playoff eligibility.

Looking ahead, the NASCAR Cup Series will head to Richmond Raceway on Saturday, August 16th, marking the only race weekend at this historic 0.75-mile oval track for the season. Richmond has traditionally hosted two annual Cup races from 1959 through 2024.

Fan Take: Van Gisbergen’s remarkable streak of wins on road courses highlights the growing diversity of talent in NASCAR, signaling an exciting era for the sport. His dominance not only boosts Trackhouse Racing’s profile but also raises the bar for competitors, ensuring fans witness thrilling and competitive races ahead.
